Larger quantities of leftover product should be disposed of in the original containers in accordance with the applicable regulations. To preserve the quality of the surface, we recommend regular cleaning and care using a lint-free cotton cloth. For certain works glossy finishes just don’t look ‘right’, so matt or nearly matt might be most appropriate; I often think that small paintings look a little odd when too glossy for example, the gloss seems out of scale with the work somehow, so size might be a deciding factor also.

From Winsor and Newton, an excellent range of aerosol varnishes (seven in all) covering most of the key media areas where artists are involved. Hold the brush at a shallow angle to the surface when applying varnish, not upright as you might do when painting, so that you’re laying a coat of finish on the surface of the work with most of the length of the bristles, rather than brushing it on with the tip as normal.Eyeburp, the gloss of acrylic polymer emulsions just isn’t that good compared to other finishes that you might have in mind. The poly I used to refinish my hardwood floors has a very undesirable (for paintings) and very noticable golden yellow tint. For water-based varnish rinse it out thoroughly (under a cold running tap is good) until there is no milky residue visible when you bend or squeeze it and then lightly soap and rinse thoroughly again.

Traditionally a combination of drying oil, resin, and a thinner or solvent, Varnish is a transparent liquid which dries to form a hard, protective film. Floorcloths are a difficult problem for acrylic paints as they won’t stand up to much physical abuse. My works are on paper so it has to be flexible too, having tried many others this is the best available. First, the painting should be allowed to dry for at least 48 hours before varnishing, in the case of thicker paint longer might be required, especially in humid conditions. The larger the picture the wider the brush that should be used, to speed the process and simply for ease – a 4″ brush for large paintings for instance. VERSATILE - Liquitex Varnish can be used on almost any painting surface, from paper and canvas to wood, leather, silk and plastics.
