If possible, can you please comment about the TX3 versus the Arc’teryx Acrux FL (fixed liner, non-GTX) that you also reviewed? The Vibram Lug design on the TX Guide utilizes a unique lug pattern that provides grip in sand and rock, as well as traction on smooth granite and slick surfaces. The stiff polyester uppers are bomber, and a thick rubber rand covers the toes while a rubberized heel guard protect the back of the shoe. For the TX Guide La Sportiva relies on Vibram TXG technology, a combination of Vibram’s Idrogrip and Megagrip compounds.

Sean has worn and tested approach shoes in all imaginable scenarios and conditions, from fast-and-light ropeless ascents in the Sierra to heavy-and-slow slogs to far-off basecamps in the Himalayas and over one hundred descents off Yosemite Big Walls. If you're going to have just one approach shoe in your quiver, you might just want to make it the TX3. Even after tons of time spent on the sharp granite of Tuolumne, the mesh held its own without showing any signs of abuse. After a few trudges up and off some Sierra peaks, we never experienced a grain of the kitty-litter-like dirt the Sierra is known for making its way into our shoes. This outsole is ideally suited for rocky terrain where you’ll encounter a lot of talus and granite slabs. If you need an approach shoe primarily for hiking, you could probably just get a (likely cheaper) hiking shoe. The TX Guide is a very firm and stable trail shoe that has been the perfect option to handle technical trails and heavy packs.

There are a few reasons why this shoe has jumped to the front of my queue of approach shoes for any day that involves scrambling. I don’t do any climbing, but love using approach shoes for technical hiking and backpacking with a heavy load.

I’m also yet to use them in really muddy conditions, but the tread pattern looks like it may not be the best for providing grip in mud. This performance is enhanced by the use of Vibram MegaGrip rubber, which is also found on the La Sportiva TX4 and the Scarpa Rapid and Crux. I can’t find the heel-to-toe drop of the TX3 listed online, but from my crude caliper measurement, it’s in the 10mm range. Since the flatirons here champion smearing, the TX 3 may just work well enough for me at the moment. They worked well on the slickrock in Utah, but have also held up well on slimy Blue Mountains sandstone, along with wet quartz conglomerate in Tasmania.
