And so it was with tempered excitement that I approached Mountains of Madness, published by IELLO and distributed in the UK by Coiledspring Games.

Eventually, you’ll reach the Edge of Madness, and if you’re still alive you’ll have to face 3 Escape challenges to leave the mountain. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys cooperative and hidden traitor or bluffing games in equal measures. That said, I liked the description you gave of the game, but I had the same reaction that Wade did, in that the cards would become a known quantity too easily and the game would be just a routine of how to play around it, rather than play with it. You must work together and communicate well to successfully scale this mountain, find fascinating relics, then escape from this accursed place. The full moon gave our untested equipment an ethereal luminescence, that was almost beautiful enough to distract from the biting wind and its whispered words. The Injury Card deck is placed face up on the board in it’s space, as is the Arcane Equipment Card deck and the Relic Card deck. Also, madness only really applies during the encounter phase, which seems like a miss by the designers. That could be taking wounds (worthless cards that clog the deck), gaining madness, or losing leadership. Like those games, you end it flying a burning plane off the mountain while half your team is trying to eat the cockpit chairs, and the other half is leaking more blood than the plane is leaking fuel. Challenges represent the real meat of Mountains of Madness, so I’ll explain them in a bit of detail.

The die result can also lead to confusion which forces the Leader to discard as many cards from the Equipment deck as the difference between the total value of cards played of the required type and the failed challenge value. The game itself throws different challenges at the players that they will have to overcome together while role playing whatever quirks that the madness cards throw at them. If they succeed in meeting at least one of the two challenges on a tile, they collect a reward; for every challenge they fail, they suffer the penalty indicated by rolling a custom die.All that being said, if you’ve got players who aren’t ready to do a little improv or be a little silly, you may want to look elsewhere for a co-op.

As a party game, it can be quite a laugh forcing players to hum any communication, or to skip certain words whilst trying to be effective. Safety Warning not suitable for children under the age of three Box Contains 1 x Mountain board 5 double-sided Player Boards 1 Airplane figurine 1 Sand Timer (30 seconds) 1 Sled board 6 Leadership tokens 1 Penalty die 36 Encounter tiles 66 Madness cards 11 Relic tokens 48 Equipment cards 11 Relic cards 15 Injury cards 1 rulebook See more. It is challenging, exciting, and hilarious to play but requires more strategy than most party games and more extroversion than most strategy games which may make this game tough to find an audience for. That said, because of the experience the game creates, combining the end goal (more relics than injuries) and maintaining the pacing of the game up the mountain can be a challenge for new gamers to grasp.Losing doesn’t prevent you from having fun, but as you grow familiar with the madnesses in play and the more efficient ways to explore, you’ll improve your score. I like the artistic design for the sled and how well it fits in with the theme and designs of the rest of the game.
