About this deal

Cover artwork by: Dan Rempel A beautiful book with printed endpapers and paste-downs, full-color frontispiece and illustrations and with marking ribbon etc. I’m sure back in the 70s this was some shocking shit all right, but I’ve read plenty of gross, shocking, and downright ‘Whaaaaat? And the kids’ conversations about what to do with her, all carried out in a very democratic style, did seem the behaviour of children in over their heads.

One quick thing to say about the writing is that it really would have been nice to have more paragraph breaks! It’s heartbreaking when you begin to analyze that you are reading the final mental processes of someone in their early twenties, let alone at the hands of teenagers, children really.I both highly recommend it and also don't because it's a truly excellent piece of horror fiction which has been severely overlooked but it is also not something that I think most people will be able to stomach. Deconstruction: Pretty much does this to the oft-used comedic plot device of the babysitter being tied up by her charges ( I Love Lucy for example). As someone who has dealt with some mental health issues and spent time thinking about what happens when we die, I found Johnson’s thought process about this fascinating.

It definitely deserves 5 stars and I can definitely say that I will not be forgetting about this book. And just a final warning here – some of the subject matter may be difficult for some people to digest or read. a truly frighteningly realistic vintage classic which will make you shudder and maybe look at kids differently wondering what they could be thinking !At first it seems like a game to the kids, but as the captivity continues, they find themselves getting bored of just having a prisoner and think up fun new games to play with their “toy” while Barbara tries desperately to appeal to their humanity and escape. But no, Johnson's writing seems to skirt around this just enough so that the kids simply come across as evil. Cindy doesn’t feature in the novel an awful lot, but when she does she’s simply a bored young girl who doesn’t fully understand the reality of what’s happening. We find out he is sports driven, wanting to make the football team this next school year and that he feels a lot of lust towards women but doesn’t know how to process it completely.
