Increasingly threatened by the financial burdens on the college, the local archdeacon wants to close the college -- he becomes one of the murder victims -- but his past ties with one of the teachers make his judgments suspect. D. James, the plot is complicated, and purists might complain that its resolution depends on the most Dickensian of coincidences. When the body of one of the students is found on the shore smothered by a fall of sand, his wealthy father demands that Scotland Yard reexamines the verdict of accidental death.

He is a good man, a poet, and he stands and speaks for Phyllis's humanity, a humanity that meant she could imagine what it was to be so overrun by desire or envy or anger or vengefulness that a person would commit a terrible crime. Her formal education, however, ended at age 16 because of lack of funds, and she was thereafter self-educated. She received honorary degrees from seven British universities, was awarded an OBE in 1983 and was created a life peer in 1991.

I didn't guess who 'dunnit' until it came out about two thirds of the way through that someone had a huge motive for commiting a string of murders, the rest of the book being about how Commander Dalgleish goes about proving it. The solitude found in and around the setting, along with the contemplative (almost monastic) aspect of the story definitely appealed to my personal taste. It also turns out that as a child, his father being a parson, that Dalgliesh spent time at St Anselms and it becomes somewhat a visit into his past.

In 2000 she celebrated her eightieth birthday and published her autobiography, Time to Be in Earnest. James - awarded an OBE in 1983 and made a life peer in 1991 - was the bestselling, internationally acclaimed author of eighteen crime novels including the Adam Dalgliesh and Cordelia Gray series, The Children of Men and two posthumously published collections of short stories. I've watched this a couple of times before, once (stoopidly) relatively recently, and I think it probably needs more sparse watching, because it's a relatively slowly-unfolding story.
