It's filled with the recommendations that they provide - books for loneliness, books to scare you, books for being normal or books to travel somewhere new.

The idea about the book pharmacy and using books to fill the void whether we’re in a pandemic or just feeling a little lost in the world. While I've read thousands and have a sizeable home library, few books have ever begged me to read them again. I'd recommend this book to book lovers as it contains lots of book recommendations within it and I've written quite a few down.Although she’d never have chosen it, her dance with cancer has changed her life in many positive ways. Some of these books I own, and want to read even more now; some I have read and enjoyed the small summery to remind me why I loved them and some that I haven't read, but have now been added to my TBR. It’s the state of mind and heart of the person reading it that will make the book grow into something greater than the words printed in it.

There’s a woman who’s just escaped from an abusive husband…and there’s a moody teenager who takes what seems to be an irrational dislike to Kelly. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Loved also that so many great books are mentioned and recommended, especially for specific needs, recovering from loss, and adding to wonderful events and hopes for the future. These vignettes truly capture the tone of 2020 with loneliness, fear and grief being juxtaposed with community, joy and love.

I adored this novel but I cautiously recommend it, as I am aware that the Covid-19 pandemic is ongoing and a novel about it may be triggering for some people. I had a little smile when Flowers for Mrs Harris by Paul Gallico was mentioned, as I’m currently listening to that on audiobook. A love letter to books, so many are mentioned and how they might help with various emotional states. Set during the dark days of Covid shutdowns and isolation, this chronicles how a myriad of ordinary people struggled through all of the challenges. Stephanie lives near the sea in the north-east of England, with her husband Alan and Harris the greyhound. There are quite a few issues covered, and it’s quite clever the way that they’re introduced via the ‘book pharmacy’. There are a real range of reasons that people turn to books when they are compulsorily stuck at home from domestic abuse through loneliness, insecurity, love stories and the inevitable deaths from COVID.

Kelly also comes up with the idea of a ‘book pharmacy’, prescribing books to help people as they deal with problems, whether or not related to the pandemic. I liked the idea that when you read the first sentence of any book, you are completing the author’s work. There is a great deal of talking about, loss in all its forms and I was very upset at times during the book.
