For home practice, try the dedicated mode that adjusts the sound for optimum quality when the FP-30X is placed on a desktop, or connect headphones to the twin outputs for silent practice day or night, either solo or alongside your piano teacher. Apart from this, things are quite straightforward, and you can even control the volume of each layer separately to achieve a better mix. When it comes to sounds, Roland has a long-standing pedigree of being one of the best sound designers on the market. The FP-30X has absolutely spectacular piano sounds, a heavier acoustic piano like action and awesome connectivity, but the user interface really isn’t the greatest; so depending on what you’re looking for, it may be the perfect piano for you?

The latter features a non-slip feel, which is particularly noticeable during longer playing sessions.Having played some very expensive digital and acoustic pianos over the years, I always love how different each model feels. I have no interest in downloading the Roland apps as I only wanted a piano I could play without the hassle of the internet! In my opinion, unless you’re just turning it on and only using one or two sounds, this user interface is NOT gonna cut it for performing live, you will definitely need to rely on the app; but .

Unfortunately, the app itself is a little bit hard to use, and could probably be improved with a better user interface. With graded keybeds, keys in the lower registers require more force than those in the upper registers. From its compact size, portability, excellent speaker system, connectivity and ability to add various stands and pedal-boards; this piano is flexible and great for a beginner or professional performer. You’re given 3 options: off (the speakers are shut off), stand (the sound is optimized for when the keyboard is placed on a stand), desk (the sound is optimized for when the keyboard is placed on a table). You can only record a single MIDI track at any given time, which seems overly basic, especially since other digital pianos allow you to record separate left- and right-hand parts. To check out how this piano sounds, including some of the other available sounds and functions – here’s a great demo below! In the long run, a keyboard stand and a piano bench as well as a gig bag or even a hardshell case are also recommended for this instrument. For example, you can use the on-board speakers as a monitor of your playing on stage whilst the sound is going out through your PA. Those look like real scratches, but they are not, and can easily be removed with a piece of a wet cloth or your finger.

Using a mechanical hammer mechanism, Roland manages to emulate the feel of acoustic piano playing, where every keypress causes the hammers to strike true strings. So depending on your budget I would certainly recommend this piano for both a beginner and advanced player. If your goods develop a fault within the warranty period, we'll quickly repair or replace the item for you. The original FP-30 is 5 years old at this point, and it’ll be important to see if its updated counterpart brings anything new to the table. They both have “not very good” user interfaces that rely heavily on function key combinations, and the apps for both pianos really aren’t the greatest, but the Casio does have a couple of things in ITS favour; it is SUPER light at around 25 lbs, and it can run on batteries. While other instruments might include better controls or more sounds, it is hard to beat Roland’s PHA-4 Standard in terms of realism.
