Description

James Mayhew's first book for children was Katie's Pictures Show, (Orchard Books 1989) establishing the long running series about a child's adventures in an art gallery.

A beautiful story to capture any child if looking to use London as a topic or about to visit London itself. It is not included in promotions available to our main range products, as stated in our terms of service. Katie and her brother are taken on a tour of the sights of London, they take in Trafalgar Square, The London Eye and Buckingham Palace in the company of their friend the Lion.

I know most of the landmarks Katie visits, and the older granddaughter brought it home from her own visit. Many of his books have a cultural agenda and James is passionate about introducing children to art, music, opera, ballet and traditional tales. One of my little pet grumbles is how the British name of Father Christmas is replaced so often for the Americanised Santa. Feelings are important too – young readers will like the touching ending when Katie and Jack hand over a woolly blanket, purchased at Harrods with the last of their pocket money, to keep the lion’s tummy warm. When Grandma gets tired they stop a while in Trafalgar Square, and whilst Grandma rests on a bench Katie and her brother find themselves going on a magical adventure with one of the Trafalgar Square lions! Love this great story adventure book as Katie and one of the Trafalgar Square lions see all the best sights of London from the Tower of London to Buckingham Palace. James Mayhew has a series of books about Katie that are usually introducing children to a particular artist. What initially comes to mind is using this story within geography and using maps of London to pinpoint the famous sights mentioned within the book. On their travels with the lion they visit St Paul's Cathedral, The Tower of London, Tower Bridge and some of the sights along the South Bank like The Globe Theatre. Not only is it informative about the features of the incredible city, but the illustrations allow the reader to create vivid images in their head.

When Katie and her cousin Jack visit London with Grandma, they don't think there's much to see and do.As a storyteller he has devised and performed a series of sell-out concerts for children with the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra, and has participated in prom performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

When Katie and her cousin Jack visit London with Grandma, they don’t think there’s much to see and do. Did you know that the Tower of London used to be a zoo, or about the now defunct London railway that transported over 200,000 people to their final resting place? Alongside his work in publishing, James has devised and performed in a hugely successful series of concerts for children, combining live classical music, storytelling and live art. James’s Katie picture book series has been making art an adventure for children worldwide for 25 years. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions.Together Katie and her brother Jack travel with one of the famous Trafalgar lions and take us on a journey to all these places. This uses the same similar concept in most of James Mayhews books when Katie whilst with her grandma and brother visit a museum, Scotland etc. This review is on behalf of my twin almost-three-year-old associates, whose cousin, now 12 , passed on four books that she thinks she has grown out of. When Katie and her brother Jack visit London with Grandma, something very unexpected happens… One of the Trafalgar Square lions comes to life and takes them on a wonderful tour of the city including Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Big Ben and the London Eye. And since we always try to spend a weekend in London at christmas with kids it will be sure to bring back lots of memories.
