Description

With Moon Lists, I strive to strike a balance between asking questions that can prompt deeper or unexpected thinking without feeling overly self-serious, embarrassingly earnest (or like I’m advocating for narcissism disguised as self-care). The Moon Lists are a side project for Leigh, a true passion project for which she exerts the same care and dedication that she puts into her clients’ work. We took a moment with her to reflect on her journey and explain about her unique services, as well as discovering her.

Loosely organized around the phases of the moon and punctuated with references to '70s astrology, architecture, and art, Moon Lists encourages journalers to stop and reflect on the precious moments in their lives before time passes them by. Now, Moon Lists are available to all in the form of a bound volume and a recently launched digital workbook. A perfect gift for yourself or a friend, this beautifully designed journal helps expand all aspects of your creative, personal, and emotional self. And while that seems like maybe a parent’s cliched nightmare-ish combo, today my work for Moon Lists and also for my studio LUCCA (aka my “real” job) touches on all these things. I’m not sure who the target reader is here but it didn’t speak to me, a 40 year old spiritual woman.

I requested permission to reinvent the concept using new questions and a different format, and he kindly obliged. It was structured around students creating and guiding their own creative pursuits, and to design a degree around that. I’ve kept some form of a journal for most of my life, but its format has evolved (the most current iteration of the digital Moon Lists is probably the closest to how it looks now, a combination of observations, lists, personal inventories). This is one step in the direction of exploring parts of the mind present tense that are new, unknown, and full of possibility.

There is no wrong way to do it, but I do think it becomes meaningful to separate the Moon List-ing from other to-do lists or notebooks you might use to structure a workday or task list. This project is very much a side gig that — like anyone’s passion project — often gets slotted into late night weekend work sessions or bookended into whenever I have random pockets of spare time. You can define “the last four weeks” however you want: maybe you complete your list on the first of each month or maybe you just jump in whenever you can. This interactive form has only been amplified during quarantine, where days have felt at once emotionally loaded and exceptionally rote. As longtime readers of Leigh Patterson’s online project, Moon Lists, this book is a fun personal way to connect with the author’s engaging questions. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. you’ll find yourself grabbing this journal booklet time and time again bridging the gap between the unconscious and conscious.

Every week in this journal provides a list-making prompt or memory-gathering touchstone for self-reflection. I realized recently that the narrative I was telling others in casual conversation needed adjusting. Maybe you develop your own ritual surrounding self-reflection (lighting a candle or a stick of special incense).Loosely organized around the phases of the moon and punctuated with references to ’70s astrology, architecture, and art, Moon Lists encourages journalers to stop and reflect on the precious moments in their lives before time passes them by. We spoke with Leigh about the inspiration behind this project and the importance of making time for deep and unexpected modes of thinking.
