Gear Editor Mallory Paige lives in an off-grid cabin and has been using the Everest 2X as her family’s primary stove. After cooking up to three meals a day on it for over a year, the stove has held up impressively well. And please do read the warning that follows. Some cheaper versions of these stoves can explode or set on fire. We’ve been getting a stream of scary stories from readers since posting Jim’s warning (see next). Durability and quality: Look for a camping BBQ that is made of high-quality materials and is built to last. Look for features such as windscreens, and durable construction. How long will you be running it for each time? This will help to determine how much fuel you’re going to need. A large amount of solid fuel such as wood or BBQ briquettes can be bulky to transport while gas may be a more compact option. Turn off the stove: Once you are finished cooking, turn off the stove and disconnect the fuel source.

Ignite the stove: Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for the specific method of lighting the stove. Some camping stoves have an electric ignition while others may require a match or lighter. Also, you won't be able to engage the 'on' lever with the pan rest in it's 'upside down' position (a safety feature). The pan rest has to be the right way up in it's working position.

Size and portability: Consider how much space you have for storing and transporting the BBQ, and how easy it is to set up and take down.

Bumping up the BTUs can certainly speed up the cooking process, especially when it comes to bringing water to a boil. The GSI Selkirk 540+ and Coleman 3-in-1 both pump out around 12-14,000 BTU, and were able to bring a liter of water to a boil in less than 4 minutes 30 seconds. This increase in performance does come with a cost, however, and in high-performance 20,000 BTU stoves like the Camp Chef Everest 2X, fuel consumption will take a hit. Consider bringing along multiple gas canisters when cooking with these higher-power options. Time to Boil

Editor’s Note: We updated this guide on October 20, 2023, to include additional information on our testing practices, the different types of camping stoves, as well as to ensure that our selections are still current. The Best Camping Stoves of 2023 Just a couple of tips if you haven't used one before. It is possible to get a dodgy canister or not fit it quite right so before using the piezo ignition make sure you can't hear any hissing of escaping gas coming from the canister. If fitting the canister is proving difficult then you aren't doing it right. The Vango Blaze Double features two stainless-steel burners on a sturdy base with a PVC hose and auto shut off for safety. The smooth grey design is easy to clean, and the simple controls make this a great option for first time family campers or those looking for a reliable stove at a great price point.

Although the Camp Chef Everest has some of the strongest burners we tested, it still simmers well. And with the new burner and surface design, you get a few more cubic inches of cooking space for the same weight. Different air temperatures and altitudes will boil water differently, so we tested all of these stoves at the same altitude. Don’t buy one of these stoves and expect it to boil water at these specific times; instead, use this as a rough guide as to which stove heats the most effectively and gets the hottest. Some stoves might have faster boiling times, and others might have better simmer capabilities. If you’re a fan of cast iron, or simply want an all-in-one option that performs well in every category, the 3-in-1 is one of the best camping stoves you can buy. BOTTOM LINE: The Jetboil Genesis Basecamp System showcases some of the coolest new technology available for outdoor cooking. The stove folds up into a rugged metal pod that nests inside a pot for compact storage. The pot and stove, along with a frying pan, lid, windscreen, and regulator fit into a travel bag no bigger than a bowling ball. Needless to say, the Genesis Basecamp System is one of the most portable and space-saving stoves on the market. The heat retention coils on the base of the pot made this system incredibly fast and efficient for cooking and boiling water. We also love that you can customize the number of burners using the Jetlink port. The Genesis Basecamp System is a versatile, top-quality cooking system with an emphasis on streamlined portability and maximum fuel efficiency. Fill the brass burner unit ¾ of the way full with methanol and place very carefully into the slot on the bottom windshield. Be careful not to spill the methanol. Steer clear of the double-canister Popamazing stoves – a fault on the connection could make them dangerous. Also, don’t bother with the Campingaz Bistro 300 – very low on gas power and the plastic parts melt far too easily.

The Onja Stove features two individually adjustable burners, an oak lid which doubles as a serving or chopping board, and an integrated carry strap for easy transport. This stylish stove is easy to set up, boils water in around 4 minutes, and is perfect for family campers given the double burner. Weight is one of the biggest differentiators between the stoves on this list. However, these stoves are built for car camping, so you won’t really be carrying them too far. If you know you want a capable and strong two-burner, weight might not matter as much as other features. The author camping and cooking along the Arkansas River; (photo/Eric Phillips) Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Camping Stove CONS: Slightly less compact than some, auto igniter doesn’t always work (general con of piezo ignitors) Assemble the stove: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to put together the various parts of the stove, such as the burners, fuel line, and windscreen.Sunngas are a good make and it should be fine. I am using cheap Asda gas canisters on mine at the moment and it works perfectly. Both the stove and the canisters are very common so you shouldn't have any problem at all. Of course Sunngas will recommend their own gas.
